Saturn
The one everybody wants to see through a telescope, and the one that never disappoints.
Seeing it from the UK
Easily visible with nothing but your eyes when it is up, as a steady yellowish point that does not twinkle the way a star does. That steadiness is the giveaway. To see the rings you need magnification, and less than you might think: around twenty five times is enough to show them clearly, which is within reach of a modest telescope or a good spotting scope on a tripod. Binoculars will not do it, though they show the planet as an oval rather than a point.
Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second largest, big enough to swallow more than seven hundred Earths. It has no solid surface to stand on. What looks like a smooth golden ball is the top of an atmosphere thousands of miles deep, and the calm appearance is misleading: winds near its equator run at over a thousand miles an hour.
The rings are the reason people fall for it. They are not solid and they are not one ring but thousands of narrow bands, made almost entirely of water ice, from grains the size of dust to lumps the size of a house. They are also astonishingly thin. Tens of thousands of miles across, and in most places only about ten metres deep.
Because Saturn is tilted like the Earth, the angle we see the rings at changes slowly through its orbit. Over about fifteen years they open out to their widest and then close to a line so thin they briefly vanish from view, as they did in 2025. A photograph taken this decade and one taken in the next will not look like the same planet.
